What Is Vascular Disease?

As the highway in which red blood cells, white blood cells, nutrients, and oxygen travel throughout our bodies, blood vessels, arteries and veins play a very important role in our overall cardiovascular health. With such a vast network of vessels, our circulatory system can become compromised in many different ways that can cause lasting health problems, severe medical issues, and can sometimes prove fatal. These issues can be boiled down to vascular disease (vasculopathy), a specific subgroup of cardiovascular disease.

The most common types of vascular disease are as follows:

Venous Diseases – This involves a disorder within the veins, primarily due to inflammation, venous insufficiency, obstruction of plaque, and blood clotting. Blood clots can occur over time due to traumatic damage, congenital disorders, immobility, inflammation, and obesity, which can all put stress on the veins causing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). One of the more common disorders of venous dieseas is venous insufficiency which can manifest as spider veins or varicose veins. If the lower extremities don’t get efficient blood return, the impaired veins can become swollen, painful, and potentially cause the formation of ulcers.

Arterial Diseases – Oxygen is single-handedly one of the most important ways our body can live and thrive. With a lack of oxygen supplying our bodies, organs, and extremities, serious issues can occur. Oxygen-rich blood delivery is one of the main functions of our arteries as they work hand in hand with the heart to transport oxygen to the brain. Any narrowing of these blood vessels due to formation of plaque, and a buildup of fats and cholesterol and cause lasting issues, including Coronary artery disease, Carotid artery stenosis, Cerebrovascular disease, and more.

In the case of modern medicine and innovative techniques, vascular diseases have become treatable with diet, weight loss, exercise, medications, and lastly surgery. If you believe your arteries or veins may be having a problem, our professional vascular surgeons are standing by to provide you with peace of mind.
